Life in the Fog

“My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive;
and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.”

Britex Fabrics Textile 101

I took this workshop from Britex Fabrics early this month and it was my first ever lesson on textiles.  The lovely Geana Sieburger, a Marketing Director at Britex and owner of GDS Cloth Goods was the instructor of the class and it was a really fun, hands-on lesson in textiles- origins of the fabric, its shrinkage factor, and the many different ways of how fabrics are processed.  Best of all, it's taught over pie desserts by the Three Babes Bakeshop, and drinks and materials are included - all for $20.00.

Levo League and M.M. LAFLEUR

I attended this really fun networking event last Thursday at one the lovely Clift Hotel suites.  The Bay Area's Levo League helped host M.M. LAFLEUR'S pop-up store in San Francisco.  The clothes were really amazing and best described as "Barneys quality clothes at Zara prices."

I really fell in love with the Jina dress in cinnamon

Sewing basics

I'm taking a break from curating unofficial SF style by district and instead, I'm going back to the basics and learning to sew in the hopes of creating my own clothing line.

My first step was finding classes in the city and I found one in the most unlikely of places - TechShop.  It's a shop that goes beyond manufacturing; you can also take a silkscreen printing or textile classes without having to be a member.

The space was pretty neat and it was great seeing all the different kinds of equipment and watching people actually make things.  Also, you get to meet people and learn about the interesting projects they're working on and most importantly, the instructor made it really easy to learn how to sew.

I wish I can show you the outcome of the little pouch bag I made, but I'm way too embarrassed.

SF Style- The Richmond

I used to live in the Inner Richmond, particularly around the corner from vibrant Clement Street, and I really miss the area.  There's just about every kind of ethnic food you can think of in the Richmond and whether you're craving a piroshki, mango tapioca bubble tea, pork filled buns, or tom yum goong soup - it's all there. I have yet to try Troya for its Mediterranean food and Assab Eritrea for Ethiopian.

I also have to mention Schubert's Bakery for their cakes - the St. Honore is my favorite, and Blue Danube Coffee House for their mochas which is perfect if you're waiting to get into Burma Superstar.  The other great option is to browse for books at Green Apple Books.
